Becoming a Sales Professional: An Apprentice’s Diary
Hi, I’m Maria Deben Amparan.
These last two weeks have been about stepping up. I’ve been managing my own sales pipeline from start to finish, and it’s taught me more than just process; it’s taught me presence.
I’ve closed-won three opportunities now. That didn’t happen by chance: it came from staying close, following up, and meaning what I say. When I commit to something, I follow through. That’s how I’ve found new chances to upsell: by listening and not pushing. Customers feel it when you’re consistent; they trust you when your word holds.
One of my first closed-won opportunities seemed simple: everything moved quickly and smoothly. But during a follow-up, the customer mentioned a new need. I listened, understood the gap, and offered a solution that fit. She agreed, and we activated a new service together. That moment taught me something powerful: when you stay close and truly listen, you don’t just close deals, you open doors.
In another case, I pitched services to a customer who was in the middle of a migration process between companies. Instead of stepping back, I stepped in. I supported him through the transition, chased updates internally, and kept him informed every step of the way. We worked as a team. He told me: “As soon as everything’s ready, I’ll accept your quote”, and he did. That trust was built not just on what I offered, but on how I showed up.
I’ll say this clearly: Never let your customers down. If you say you’ll do something, do it. If you promise to follow up, follow up.
That’s how you build a reputation that lasts longer than any deal.
My first panel: Personal Brand at ISP
I also had the honour of speaking on my first-ever panel with the Institute of Sales Professionals. The topic was Personal Brand: How can personal brand build authenticity that attracts and retains talent? Watch it here and earn a CPD point!
It was a big moment for me. Not just because I spoke, but because I was seen. It opened recognition inside my organisation, gave me visibility, and showed me that growth isn’t just about numbers, but about showing up.
When someone opens a door
Sometimes, someone sees you before the rest of the room does. They believe in your voice, presence, and potential, and they make sure others notice too.
I was invited to speak, lead, and be seen. As a result of that quiet belief, new doors opened and I was given the chance to present to senior leaders in my organisation; I was seen and I’ll never forget what that kind of support feels like.
A quiet thank you
There’s someone who’s walked beside me through every step of this journey. Someone who believed in me before the results showed up, who cheered for my little triumphs like they were big ones, and who reminded me that growth isn’t always loud, it’s often quiet, steady, and deeply felt.
I’ll never forget that kind of support, and I’ll always be grateful.
When the sunlight isn’t shining
Some days are just hard. You wake up with sadness in your chest, and the world feels heavy. The sunlight doesn’t show up, and neither does your usual spark. But even then, especially then, you have to try.
You have to find your own light. Keep moving. Keep busy. Even if it’s just making tea, tidying your space, or writing a few lines in your diary.
Look for the things that move you:
- The people who love you
- The things that make you feel like yourself
- The goals you’ve set that still matter, even on the hard days
You don’t have to feel amazing; you just have to keep choosing yourself. That’s how you find the light again, not all at once, but slowly, gently, like a sunrise that takes its time.
You’re not just learning sales, you’re learning how to be trusted, and that’s the real win.
