Becoming a Sales Professional: An Apprentice’s Diary
Hi, I’m Maria Amparan.
A year ago, I entered sales, not just as a role but as a rhythm: apprentice, strategist, listener, builder. Twelve months later, I’ve kept the promise I made to myself, which was to show up with clarity, emotional intelligence, and quiet impact.
The anniversary passed without fanfare. No LinkedIn notification. No platform reminder. However, I remembered and so marked it with a post, not for applause, but for alignment, because this milestone wasn’t just a date; it was a moment to honour Maria.
What I’ve built, even when no one was watching
This year taught me that success isn’t always loud; it’s built in:
- Study guides I created to support others, even before they knew they needed them
- Outreach rehearsals that turned into real conversations
- Pipeline visibility that didn’t chase attention, but earned trust
- Emotional clarity that anchored relationships, even in ambiguity
- Learnt two different CRMs: Siebel and Salesforce.
These weren’t extras, they were part of how I showed up fully in my role.
I’ve studied, learned, cared, and adapted. Sometimes expressive, sometimes reflective, but always present. I’ve given my all, every single time.
The invitation that reflected my legacy
This week, I was invited by ISP to join as a panellist for the webinar “How can personal brand build authenticity that attracts and retains talent?”. It’s an honour, but more than that, it’s a reflection, because while my brand isn’t performative, it’s felt. It’s built in the way I prepare, the way I dress, the way I hold space for complexity without losing clarity. It’s in the way I study, learn, and care. The way I put my heart into everything I do, that’s what makes me stand out.
Being asked to speak on personal brand, after a year of building mine quietly, felt like confirmation: I’ve been doing the work, and it shows.
A funny moment (because growth deserves cake)
I briefly considered bringing a cake to mark my anniversary. My husband raised an eyebrow: “Isn’t that a bit much?” he asked. Maybe. But when something is valuable, it deserves to be seen.
So, I skipped the office cake, but the celebration found me anyway.
When I got home, there it was: a beautiful gesture. A whole new workstation, complete with a second screen, designed to support my growth, my study, and my rhythm. No candles, but plenty of light.
Thank you to my husband, you saw what the platform didn’t.
Why I marked my anniversary anyway
I posted about my one-year mark not because I needed recognition, but because I deserved it. I honoured Maria: the strategist, the listener, the builder. The one who kept showing up, even when the applause was quiet.
Sometimes platforms forget, and so do people. But I don’t.
Final thought: Honouring yourself is part of the legacy
If you’re in a season where your growth feels invisible, mark it anyway: write the post, listen to your favourite music, dance, go for a walk, eat something that makes you smile, light the candle, share the reflection. Not for likes, but for YOU.
Because the most powerful brand you’ll ever build is the one that stays true, even when no one’s watching, and when the invitations come, they won’t be the beginning; they’ll be the echo.
Believe in your rhythm. Celebrate your growth. Honour your journey, even when no one else sees it. You are worth the recognition, and it begins with you.
